AI Visualization: “Policing the Police”

  • This project served as the final for my Fall 2021 “Strategic Design in New Economies” course. The brief for this project was to design an AI Visualization that could be used to address a social issue. Our group shared a common goal to eradicate police brutality and address the inequity of technology in law enforcement. The final deliverable for this project was a series of iterations outlined in a presentation deck (viewable below).

This project was selected to be featured in Parsons The New School’s “Good Interventions” Design Exhibition, earning us a certificate on behalf of the university. View our reflection video and recognition below.

  • Police brutality happens within targeted communities in the US with limited accountability and is a reality that is not visualized by all the actors in our society.

Black people account for 27% of the 966 people killed by the police in 2021, despite being only 13% of the population.

There is a dire lack of accountability within police forces, as 98% of killings by police from 2013-2020 have not resulted in officers being charged with a crime.

  • Our solution was to visualize an artificial intelligence platform to generate a scoring system that lessens the likelihood of recurring police brutality within targeted communities.

  • To achieve our final iteration of the AI platform, we conducted thorough research to understand the existing landscape. Our primary research focused on eliminating bias within our system since we had observed several prior instances of biased technology within law enforcement.

To clarify the complex nature of visualizing an AI platform, I created graphics of our AI in Illustrator to convey our proposed data stacks and organizational structure.
